The Nicola U.S. Equity Income Fund seeks to deliver both current income and capital growth through investments in quality U.S.-listed companies. While our mandate primarily focuses on U.S. securities, our comprehensive research approach occasionally reveals compelling opportunities closer to home.

The Rise of a Canadian Success Story

Although Vancouver may seem far removed from the world’s major business hubs, Canada’s culture of innovation and entrepreneurship has enabled companies like Lululemon to thrive. A true pioneer in athleisure, Lululemon has redefined the sportswear industry and established itself as a leader in women’s apparel. Despite recent challenges within the sector, the brand’s innovative approach and unique strengths have made it an attractive investment opportunity.

The athletic apparel sector is a dynamic and competitive space that offers compelling investment opportunities. Historical data highlights its resilience during economic downturns, driven by enduring trends such as growing health consciousness, increased sports participation, and the practical appeal of athletic wear. In this competitive landscape, Nike and Adidas have traditionally maintained market leadership by leveraging their marketing expertise, vast distribution networks, and economies of scale.

A Distinctive Strategy for Long-term Success

Yet Lululemon has carved out its own path to success through a distinctive strategy. Rather than pursuing expensive athlete endorsements like Nike, the company builds its brand through community engagement, empowering local ambassadors to authentically represent their values. By maintaining direct control over retail locations, Lululemon creates consistent customer experiences and maintains pricing power—a stark contrast to brands dependent on third-party retailers. The company has established itself as a premium brand by emphasizing quality and high-performance materials, while simultaneously becoming a lifestyle symbol that resonates with health-conscious consumers.

This approach has yielded remarkable results. Lululemon now leads the global women's sports apparel market and ranks fifth in overall global sportswear. Their expansion into China has been particularly noteworthy, with sales exceeding $1 billion and growing, cementing their position among the world's premier sportswear brands.1

Identifying Equity Value Through Market Uncertainty

The opportunity for us to invest in Lululemon emerged during a period of heightened competition in North America, coupled with internal challenges such as innovation slowdowns and leadership changes. These factors led to a significant valuation decline, which we perceived as a rare opportunity to invest in a leading global brand at what we considered a deeply discounted price.

Looking Beyond Borders for Quality Investments

While the Nicola U.S. Equity Income Fund typically focuses on U.S. companies, our comprehensive research approach extends beyond borders and across industry value chains. This broader perspective often reveals that market leaders are not always the most obvious choices. By applying this approach, we recognized the potential of a standout brand flourishing close to home. Sometimes, the best opportunities truly are hiding in plain sight.
